DAY 3

Loire valley to the Volcans

Friday 13 April

300 miles (725 total)

Wet again, really wet!

Up early and no breakfast, Sara did not fancy it and it cost E25 anyway, so just a snack from the snack sack and off we went.

Shitty wet day and so we changed our plans.  We were originally going to go west and visit La Rochelle and then head south to Bordeaux but as it was pissing down we decided to just head south by the quickest route.  After all who fancies looking at the Bay of Biscay in the rain???

Using Google to point out fun things about halfway we found the fairytale Castle de Val,  Spot on and so off we went.  The castle was lovely and well worth the winding roads and stunning views for a leg stretch,

Sadly the second part of the plan failed.  We were going to find somewhere to stay overnight nearby, but the area was just plain rural with a capital R.  So the chauffeur did his thing and drove onward, ever onward, Sara working Bookings.com like a maestro.

The first town with ANY hotels was Murat.  No problem.  We pulled up outside two, both closed.  We found tourist information, no hotels, all full or, closed.  Including the one I had my finger over on Bookings.com which promised me a room.  Sara: "That won't work you tosser!, they just told us it was full".  Me: "Let's just see my darling".  Me and Booking.com came up the winners - result!.  Nice room.  Shame about the unbelievable rural food, but a bed's a bed!

One up to the boys.  Although to be fair I am the webmaster and I am writing this - so I am obviously downplaying the points the girls had won.  I leave it to Sara when she sees this to start to add her own comments - he he he!

I was alone at breakfast (Sara does not do rural, or petit dejuner).  Coffee in a soup bowl, literally, a massive bowl, held about a litre.  Bread and jam and an uncut blood sausage.  Bloody brilliant, scoffed the lot,

On the road again, thank God for the chauffeur.  Oh sorry, that's me.

On this wet and windy day I seemed to have kept my trigger finger off the photo shutter.  Trust me, the hotels were not much to photograph.  Sorry for the lack of pics.  The Chauffeur.
